Göran Tell on Piab Group's evolution

Published 08/01/2025

In a recent conversation, Isabel Furtenbach Lindén sat down with Göran Tell, who served as CEO of Piab Group for many years and is the son of the company's founder, Sven Tell. Göran shared his perspective on the company's beginnings, its growth over the years, and some key moments that have shaped its path in industrial automation.

The visionary beginnings with Sven Tell

Sven Tell, an engineer at Telegrafverket, co-founded Piab with a friend 1951, initially focusing on manufacturing "cirkelpassare," or compasses used for drawing circles. This venture began at the family kitchen table, where Sven balanced his engineering job with his passion for creating innovative products. His dedication laid the groundwork for what Piab  would eventually become.

Sven's approach was hands-on and inventive, often working late into the night. He crafted tools that were not only functional but also innovative for their time, setting a precedent of creativity and dedication that became a core part of Piab's ethos. Göran fondly recalls how his father would work tirelessly, driven by a vision to improve everyday tools.

Early involvement and growth

Göran began assisting his father from a young age, taking on tasks such as collecting supplies and helping at international exhibitions, notably in Hannover. These formative experiences were crucial in shaping his understanding of the business. He humorously recalled how his early roles were varied, from running errands to setting up trade show booths, which taught him the intricacies of the business from the ground up. A few years later, Göran was more deeply involved in the company's operations, gradually taking on leadership responsibilities.

Navigating challenges and opportunities

One of the most significant moments Göran recalled was the strategic price adjustment following the Swedish krona's devaluation in the 1980s. Upon hearing the news, Göran quickly went to the office on a Friday evening and raised prices globally to match the currency change. This decisive action helped Piab Group maintain its competitive edge without losing value.

Under Göran's leadership, Piab Group expanded its reach beyond Europe, establishing a network of independent distributors and successfully entering the U.S. market. This expansion was pivotal for Piab Group's international success.

Innovative spirit and legacy

The transition to vacuum technology marked a significant turning point for Piab Group. Although this shift wasn't initially planned, it demonstrated the company's ability to adapt and explore new directions. Göran's reflections highlight how Piab Group's willingness to embrace change has been crucial to its ongoing success.

Peter Tell, Göran's brother, played a pivotal role in this transition by founding Piab's vacuum division in 1968. His invention of the first vacuum product, the PmS-Pistol, laid the foundation for the multistage vacuum ejector technology that would become central to Piab's offerings. This innovation was key to Piab's expansion beyond Sweden, setting the stage for its global presence.

Sven's legacy is evident in Piab Group's continued focus on innovation. His spirit of exploration and dedication to quality have made a lasting impact on the company, a legacy furthered by his sons' contributions to the company's growth and technological advancements.

As Piab Group continues to evolve, Göran Tell's reflections provide a thoughtful look into the company's rich history and the leadership that has guided its success. His stories highlight the enduring role of innovation and resilience in shaping Piab Group's journey. As the company moves forward, these insights serve as a reminder of the values and vision that have brought Piab Group to where it is today, encouraging continued dedication to excellence in the years to come.
